Keyword: Problems in writing a research proposal for thesis The purpose of conducting this research is to find out the empirical evidence of the students’ problems in writing a research proposal for thesis. Design of this research uses qualitative method. The subject of this research are two regular classes at the eighth semester students of English Education Study Program in Batanghari University in academic year 2017/2018. Samples of the research are twelve (12) students, chosen by using purposive sampling. Collecting the data by using semi-structured in-depth interview. The result of this research are: all of the samples or 100% of them said that they all have problems in writing a research proposal for thesis. The problems included four factors; psychological factor, sociocultural factor, linguistic factor and cognitive factor. From those factors found the psychological factor is the major factor caused the students’ problem in writing a research proposal for thesis. As the solution, students should prepare their readiness and ability before writing a research proposal for thesis.
