English Education Study Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Batanghari University Jambi. Advisors: Dr. Suyadi, S.Pd, MA and Yanti Ismiyati, M.Pd. Key Terms: Students’ ability, Reading comprehension This research is conducted to know the students‟ ability in comprehending English reading text in descriptive text at first grade in SMP N 6 kota Jambi 2017/2018. This research used qualitative method and it was conducted at the first grade students in SMP N 6 Kota Jambi. The VIIH class was chosen as the sample. The test was used as the instrument of the research. The test take five component of reading as the specification of reading text those are finding factual information, finding main idea, guessing vocabulary in context, reference and inference. The test used multiple choice. The test was used to obtain the data about the students‟ ability in comprehending English reading text in descriptive text. From the result of the test, the major problem that faced by students were in guessing vocabulary seen by the big percentage of the result and from the result of the test, the highest score is 86 that got by 2 students. The lower score is 33 that got by 1 student.
