Abstract

Keywords: Speaking, Problem, Indonesian Speaking Environment. This thesis focuses on students’ English speaking skill problems at the eleventh grade of SMAN 11 Kota Jambi. Speaking is one of the important things that students learn to be able to master English and communicate in English. The problems often faced by students in class eleven at SMAN 11 Jambi City are their speaking problems. This research aims to find out about students' speaking problems in an Indonesian language environment. This research design is descriptive qualitative research, with research instruments in the form of observations and interviews. Observations were carried out in the classroom during English lessons, and interviews were carried out in two places, namely in the library and the infirmary. Interviews were also carried out alternately with the six students who were the research subjects. This research was conducted at SMAN 11 Jambi City on January 23rd, 2024 with the research subjects being six students from class eleven F3. From the results of data analysis, researchers found several students' speaking problems, namely: Inhibition, Nothing to say, Lack of participation, and Mother tongue use. Most of them explained that the problem they often face in speaking is the difficulty of pronunciation in English due to lack of practice and the frequent use of Indonesian so they are more accustomed to the pronunciation of their mother tongue.
