Abstract

The use of movies as a learning medium can serve as a tool to explore students' writing skills, particularly in descriptive text. One of the movies involved in this study is The School for Good and Evil by Paul Feig, which presents strong characters and detailed settings that provide material for writing tasks. This study aims to analyze students’ writing skills in descriptive text by having them describe one of the main characters from the movie. The research was conducted among second-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Batanghari University, involving a sample of 17 students. The method applied was descriptive quantitative, with data collected through a writing test. Students watched the movie twice and then wrote a descriptive paragraph based on their observations. The results showed that 11 students (64.71%) were categorized as excellent, and 6 students (35.29%) were categorized as good. The average score was 81.47, which falls into the excellent classification. These results reflect the students’ ability in aspects such as vocabulary, grammar, organization, and content in descriptive writing based on their written outputs. In conclusion, this study identified the level of students’ descriptive writing skills through the use of movie The School for Good and Evil as a stimulus in the writing task.
