Abstract

Reading comprehension is essential for academic success, yet many Indonesian EFL students struggle to understand English texts effectively. This study aimed to analyze the difficulties experienced by eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 11 Kota Jambi in comprehending English reading texts. Using a descriptive quantitative research design, data were collected from 32 students through a reading comprehension test consisting of 20 essay questions based on Nuttall's (1982) four aspects: determining main idea, understanding vocabulary, making inference, and identifying detail information. The data were analyzed using frequency counts and percentage formulas to identify the most problematic aspect. The findings revealed that the most difficult aspect was determining the main idea (34.45%), followed by detail information (22.69%), making inference (21.85%), and understanding vocabulary (21.01%). These results indicate that students face significant challenges in identifying central ideas and locating explicit information in texts, which may be attributed to limited vocabulary, lack of effective reading strategies, and insufficient exposure to English reading materials. It is recommended that teachers implement explicit strategy instruction, vocabulary-building activities, and varied reading practice to enhance students' comprehension skills.
